The series is based on a hit podcast of the same name that told the true story of Isaac Herschkopf (Rudd), a psychiatrist who abused his relationship with his clients and exploited them for his own gain. The patient in focus here is Martin Markowitz (Rudd), who, over years, found his life slowly taken over by the shrink he’d allowed in the door. Hahn plays Phyllis, Marty’s concerned younger sister, and Casey Wilson plays Dr. Herschkopf’s wife, Bonnie.
This isn’t quite what you’d expect in a series that reunites the hilarious Anchorman stars, but having these two take this story on a dark comedy route is surely the way to go. The trailer shows an interesting tonal balance – and does a good job at mostly hinting at some of the dark turns the story will take as Markowitz falls for Herschkopf’s conniving ways. It’s a fascinating true story; have a Google if you’re interested to learn more, although that may lead to some spoilers.
The series is directed by Michael Showalter (The Eyes of Tammy, The Big Sick) and Jesse Peretz, with a script written by Georgia Pritchett (Veep, Succession). Rudd and Ferrell are among the executive producers.
The first three episodes of The Shrink Next Door will be streaming on Apple TV+ from November 12th, with a new episode arriving weekly thereafter.
