Watch: ‘The Simpsons’ Try Extreme Virtual Reality in New Couch Gag

An upcoming episode of The Simpsons will have a big virtual reality angle in its couch gag opening.

Released online early on the YouTube channel of Fox’s animation department, the gag this time has the characters from TV’s popular animated family skydiving, flying a jet (sorry, Flanders), snowboarding, surfing, and diving – all from the comfort of their couch. Of course, some V.R. can be uncomfortably real; cue Homer’s scream. There are also nods to the regular ‘travelling home’ intro throughout.

It’s an amusing and creative new couch gag, and it’s quite timely considering many of us have to make do with staying at home for the time being. This will kick off upcoming episode “The Incredible Lightness of Being a Baby,” season 31’s (!) 18th episode.

The longest-running primetime scripted show in television history, THE SIMPSONS exploded into popular culture in 1990 and has remained one of the most groundbreaking and innovative entertainment franchises, recognizable throughout the world. HOMER (Dan Castellaneta), MARGE (Julie Kavner), BART (Nancy Cartwright), LISA (Yeardley Smith) and MAGGIE are instantly identifiable television icons. Rounding out this cast of characters are many beloved Springfield residents, including tavern proprietor MOE SZYSLAK (Hank Azaria) and nuclear power plant owner MR. BURNS (Harry Shearer). The Emmy Award-, Annie Award- and Peabody Award-winning animated comedy began its 31st season this year.
