‘The Starling’ Trailer: Melissa McCarthy Attempts to Deal with Tragedy in Emotional Netflix Film

Melissa McCarthy, Chris O’Dowd and Kevin Kline lead the cast of The Starling, an emotional and sweet-looking drama heading to Netflix in September.

The official trailer has arrived for the film, which has McCarthy and O’Dowd playing Lilly and Jack, a couple struggling to deal with a tragedy in their own ways. When Lilly finds herself in a battle with a territorial bird over dominion of her garden, she is given an unlikely avenue for her grief, for courage to heal her relationships, and a chance to rediscover her capacity for love.

Could be one to shed a tear or two with here. McCarthy has shown she can nail more dramatic roles and O’Dowd is always a welcome presence on screen. It’s good to see Kline, too; he needs to be in so much more these days. Apart from some of those shots of oh-so CG-looking birds, the trailer suggests a sweet pic. Count me in.

The film is directed by Theodore Melfi, known for Hidden Figures and St. Vincent. The screenplay comes from Matt Harris.

Also starring Timothy Olyphant, Daveed Diggs, Skyler Gisondo, and Laura Harrier, The Starling will be streaming on Netflix from September 24th. In the US, the film will hit select cinemas the same day.
