Idris Elba‘s Robert DuBois, aka Bloodsport, gets an early spotlight in the new look at the film. “He’s in prison for putting Superman in the ICU with a kryptonite bullet,” explains Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who’s back to recruit a new expendable team to save the world. The big threat this time: “Project Starfish.” And no, as John Cena‘s Peacemaker enquires, the fact that ‘starfish’ is used as a slang term for ‘butthole’ does not, in fact, suggest a connection to the body opening.
This thing continues to look like a crazy amount of fun, boding well for a film that appears to have given Gunn free rein to go nuts in a DC playground (WB with little interference? Whaaaat?!). The fact that this was initially given an R rating here in Australia (before an appeal changed it) suggests that, yeah… this won’t exactly be a wholesome superhero flick for the entire family. Can’t wait.
The cast also includes (deep breath), Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Michael Rooker as Savant, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, and Sean Gunn as Weasel, among others.
The Suicide Squad will open in Australian cinemas on August 5th and will open in the US in both cinemas and HBO Max on August 6th.
Official synopsis for The Suicide Squad:
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
