Bullock plays Ruth Slater, a woman who re-enters society after spending a lengthy sentence for a violent crime. It becomes clear that her past will not be forgiven and severe judgment remains in the place she once called her home. An opportunity for redemption comes with finding her estranged younger sister (Aisling Franciosi, The Nightingale), who she was forced to leave behind years earlier.
Based on a 2009 UK mini-series, Unforgiven, this marks the first US film for German filmmaker Nora Fingscheidt, whose acclaimed previous feature film, System Crasher, cleaned up at the 2020 German Film Awards. The Unforgivable‘s screenplay was penned by Peter Craig (The Town, Bad Boys for Life, The Batman), Hillary Seitz (Insomnia, Eagle Eye), and Courtenay Miles (Mindhunter).
It certainly looks like it could pack a punch. Bullock appears to be giving it her all, with a powerhouse supporting cast that includes Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Rob Morgan, and Viola Davis, among others.
We’ll see what we’re in for when The Unforgivable hits select US cinemas on November 24th, select Australian cinemas on November 25th, and wide on Netflix on December 10th.
