Toby Kebbell has joined the cast of Bloodshoot, Sony’s upcoming comic book adaptation to be led by Vin Diesel.
Diesel will be starring as the titular Valiant Comics superhero, a mortally wounded soldier who’s brought back to life with nonotechnology in order to become a living weapon. Kebbel, reports The Wrap, will be playing a villain name Axe.
Although it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s safe to assume Axe is an adaptation of the comics’ Ax, a young computer wizard who’s had different versions in the Valiant Universe. The character was an evil Harbinger, a villain to several heroes, in the original Valiant Comics. He was then a powerless, more heroic political activist in the rebooted Valiant Entertainment version.
Michael Sheen, Eiza González, Talulah Riley, Alex Hernandez and Sam Heughan will also star in the film, which will mark the directorial debut for Dave Wilson, working partner of Deadpool helmer Tim Miller at Blur Studios. The script comes from Arrival and Lights Out scribe Eric Heisserer.
Since Bloodshot is but one character in the Valiant Expanded Universe, Sony will no doubt be hoping to kick off a cinematic universe here. And with Fox finding success with films like Logan and Deadpool, they have the confident to craft an R-rated (US classification) outing that’s said to be influenced by late ’80s sci-fi pics like Robocop, Terminator and Total Recall.
Hopefully Kebbell gets something solid here. While he’s a solid actor, showcasing strong turns in RocknRolla and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (in mo-cap as troubled ape Koba), he hasn’t had much luck with his high-profile work, appearing in films like Fantastic Four, Ben-Hur, Warcraft and Wrath of the Titans.
Cameras on Bloodshot will reportedly be rolling in July.
