Tom Cruise is feeling the need for speed again.

Not only is Top Gun 2 happening, it’s happening quite soon. Whispers have been circling for years, but it’s now been confirmed – at least by Cruise.

“It’s true,” Cruise confirmed point blank to a shocked host on Aussie morning show Sunrise. “I’m gonna start filming it, probably in the next year. It’s happening. It is definitely happening.”

The late Tony Scott directed the first film to a $US356 million worldwide draw in 1986. Adjusted, that’s around $US424.5 million.

No director has been officially named for the Top Gun sequel as yet, although you can imagine we’ll get an announcement pretty soon if filming is to start in the next year. A few screenwriters have been named on the sequel’s development path, including X-Men: First Class screenwriters Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, The Town scribe Peter Craig, and most recently The Jungle Book‘s Justin Marks.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer took to Twitter a bit over a year ago to share news that he was meeting with Cruise to discuss the sequel:

Around a month ago, actor Val Kilmer, who played Iceman in the original, confirmed that he would be returning in the follow-up:
