FX has dropped the first trailer for Taboo, the upcoming series boasting Tom Hardy as star, co-writer and producer.
Based on an original story by Tom Hardy and his father Chips Hardy, also on board as the show’s consulting producer, Taboo is set in 1814 and tells the story of James Keziah Delaney, a man who returns to London from Africa after long thought to be dead. He goes about trying to rebuild his life and take on his father’s shipping empire, but his father’s legacy isn’t exactly paving the way for an easy return.
This certainly looks like the perfect kind of role for Hardy; a tough-as-nails, brooding character ready to take on anyone that stands in his way. The first trailer isn’t very impressive, with a lack of narrative clarity and awkwardly placed music, but it does show off what looks like an entertainingly gritty new series. Add Ridley Scott as executive producer and Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Locke, Peaky Blinders) as co-writer, and you’ve got yourself quite the potential winner. Hopefully.
Taboo also stars Michael Kelly, Jonathan Pryce, David Hayman, Oona Chaplin and Leo Bill.
