New Trailer for Maleficent

A new trailer has been released for Maleficent, Disney’s upcoming reinterpretation of Sleeping Beauty’s classic villain. This is an origins tale of sorts, telling the story of how Maleficent, played by a creepy, Lady Gaga-looking Angelina Jolie, goes from being the land’s fiercest protector, to an evil nemesis after she is brutally betrayed. Her quest for revenge leads to her placing a curse on the king’s infant daughter, Aurora. This trailer shows more footage than the teaser did, but we’re still not sure about the film’s tone. Will it be as creepy as it appears, surely giving kiddies nightmares for days? Or will it go all-out Disney and have Maleficent learn the errors of her ways in a quick and cutesy way? Either way, the first trailers definitely show that Disney is taking their new take in a darker direction. Fingers crossed it pays off.

Elle Fanning stars as the “beauty,” Princess Aurora. Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville also star.

This is the directorial debut of Robert Stromberg, the two-time Academy Award-winning art director behind Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.

Official synopsis for Maleficent:

From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.
