The Weinstein Co. has unveiled the first trailer for The Giver, an adaptation of Lois Lowry’s bestselling novel of the same name. In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the “real” world. Yes, it’s another depiction of a futuristic, oppressed society with a young person as the story’s focus. Directed by Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, The Bone Collector, Rabbit-Proof Fence, Salt), this sci-fi film has an all-star cast that includes Brenton Thwaites, Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holmes, Cameron Monaghan, and Taylor Swift. The tone in this trailer seems to be aiming for the usual Hunger Games-crowd, even though the source material is supposed to be of a more intellectual and philosophical calibre. Either way, we’re interested in seeing more.
