Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s bestseller Ready Player One now has its lead.
Tye Sheridan, known for his roles in The Tree of Life, Mud, Joe and last year’s Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, has been cast as Wade Owen Watts, the lead protagonist in the upcoming sci-fi adventure.
Sheridan will be starring alongside Me and Earl and the Dying Girl star Olivia Cooke, who’ll be playing Samantha Evelyn Cook, and Ben Mendelsohn, cast as antagonist Nolan Sorrento.
Ready Player One tells of a virtual contest created to compete for the billions of dollars left behind by a recently deceased video game system creator. Our lead character finds himself competing for the grand prize in the virtual world of Oasis.
This one’s big, with Warner Bros, Village Roadshow Pictures and DreamWorks teaming up to bring the cult book to the big screen. Spielberg is bringing his regulars, including three-time Oscar winning editor Michael Kahn and two-time Oscar winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski.
Sheridan continues to sign onto big projects. He’ll next be seen playing a young Cyclops in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse.
Ready Player One is currently lined up for U.S. release on March 30, 2018.
