With all the ups and downs of this project over the years, there were moments when it seemed as though an Uncharted movie would never happen. But, here we are: The trailer for Uncharted has arrived.
Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg lead this big-screen adaptation of the hugely popular video game franchise, playing Nathan Drake and Victor “Sully” Sullivan, respectively. The plot follows a young street-smart Drake as he embarks on his first treasure hunting adventure with wisecracking partner Sully. The two head on a dangerous journey to uncover “the greatest treasure never found”, while also tracking clues that could lead Drake to his long-lost brother.
The film also stars Antonio Banderas as the villain, a ruthless treasure hunter; Sophia Ali as a fellow fortune hunter and Nate’s love interest, Chloe Frazer; and Tati Gabrielle as Braddock.
A fun and energetic-looking adventure here, with charmers Holland and Wahlberg doing their thing through Indiana Jones-esque sequences and quips-a-plenty. The fantastic games (among the all-time faves for this writer) were hugely cinematic in their approach, so you would imagine a film adaptation would have a safe creative path to follow. We’ll see. The trailer has a number of nods to the game, including a big aircraft sequence that was a standout moment in the third game, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer, whose previous features include Venom, Zombieland and Zombieland: Double Tap. The script was penned by Rafe Judkins (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Wheel of Time) and Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.
Take a look at the trailer below, as well as a “Get Ready” behind-the-scenes vignette with Holland and Wahlberg hyping up the film and showing off their chemistry.
Uncharted will be in Australian cinemas on February 17th and US cinemas on February 18th, 2022.
