eOne has dropped the first trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, the Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne-starring sci-fi epic written and directed by Luc Besson (The Professional, The Fifth Element).

Based on the French graphic novel series Valerian and Laureline, from writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières, the film tells of two government-employed special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. The two are sent on a mission to Alpha, a metropolis populated by thousands of different species from all over the universe.

It’s an impressive-looking film. Off the bat, what stands out is the amount of detail Besson looks to be putting into all areas of this massive universe. He’s been working on this project for quite a while now, and there certainly seems to be a passionate amount of care put into crafting unique species and fleshed-out worlds. At least that’s what this trailer hints at. Fingers crossed Besson’s screenplay compliments the creativity and space action. We’ll get a better picture as more trailers are released.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, also starring Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, Rihanna, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock and Kris Wu, will hit US cinemas on July 21, 2017. No specific Australian release date has been confirmed as yet.

Synopsis for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets:

Based on the classic graphic novel series, Valerian and Laureline, visionary writer/director Luc Besson advances this iconic source material into a contemporary, unique and epic science fiction saga. Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories, charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner – blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But Laureline continuously rebuffs him. Under a directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all over the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time, uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing all races in great danger.
