Venom 2 will be directed by none other than actor-turned-filmmaker Andy Serkis.
Serkis, an acclaimed actor and renowned motion-capture performer (Gollum in LOTR, Kong in King Kong, Caesar in the Planet of the Apes trilogy, Snoke in Star Wars), will be making his third film as director with the sequel to Sony’s Venom. He previously directed drama Breathe and Netflix-released Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle.
Serkis has officially signed up to direct the comic book movie sequel, which will bring back Tom Hardy as journalist and symbiote-carrying hero Eddie Brock. Serkis was reportedly one of several directors being looked at; Deadline reports that Bumblebee director Travis Knight was also among the shortlist. As first reported by THR, his “expertise with CG and performance capture technology” were factors in him scoring the job.
“Verified It’s actually happening,” Serkis posted to Instagram. “I can feel it, the Symbiote has found a host in me, and I’m ready for the ride…Can’t wait.”
The first film was directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) and also starred Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed. There was a (spoilers) closing credits scene introducing actor Woody Harrelson as villain Carnage, aka Celtus Kasady. Although there have been no plot details released for the sequel, it’s safe to assume that Carnage will be one of the primary villains.
