Warner Bros. is setting up a brand new fantasy franchise, with word coming through that the studio has just optioned the rights to the Dragonriders of Pern book series from the estate of author Anne McCaffrey.
According to Deadline, “the focus is on an elite group of warriors who take to the skies on the backs of giant, fire-breathing dragons with telepathic powers. They try to save the exotic planet of Pern from a terrifying airborne menace — a rain of deadly spores that comes with the orbit of the Red Star.”
There’s quite a lot of material for the studio to mine, considering that the book series has 22 novels and takes place over a period of 2500 years.
This may very well be the next big thing for WB, who are on the lookout for a franchise that will replicate the success of Harry Potter and the soon-to-end Hobbit trilogy. There hasn’t been a producer attached to the project yet, but it shouldn’t be long till WB forms their team. We’ll keep you in the loop.
