“It was the weirdest TV finale since Lost.”

Jimmy Kimmel, fresh from hosting yesterday’s 89th Academy Awards, has talked about what went down during that jaw-dropping Best Picture fiasco.

It has since come to light that there was an error with the envelopes, with Warren Beatty accidentally being handed the envelope for Best Actress – Emma Stone for La La Land – instead of Best Picture. Confused, Beatty gave the envelope to his Bonnie and Clyde co-star Faye Dunaway, who proceeded to read out the only movie title she read on the card.

“In other words, Clyde threw Bonnie under the bus,” Kimmel said on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “Make no mistake about it, whatever confusion there was about who won, Matt Damon lost.”

Kimmel also explained the confusion that was occurring on stage, with both Moonlight and La La Land teams uncertain of what to do next.

“I’m standing there like an idiot, feeling bad for these guys, but also trying really hard not to laugh to be honest.”

Turns out it was actually none other than Denzel Washington who got Kimmel’s attention from the crowd, suggesting Moonlight director Barry Jenkins should get to the microphone.

“He’s gesturing and he’s pointing. I don’t know where he’s pointing, but he yells, ‘Barry!’ […] Thank God Denzel was there.”
