20th Century Studios has unveiled a big new trailer for West Side Story, the (Covid-delayed) upcoming musical drama directed by Steven Spielberg.
Based on the classic 1957 Broadway musical of the same name (which was itself inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet), West Side Story is set in 1950s New York and looks at the rivalry between two gangs of different ethnic backgrounds, the Jets (a white gang) and the Sharks (a Puerto Rican gang). Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler play Tony and Maria, who fall in love despite having affiliations with the opposing sides. As you can imagine, each gang isn’t too accepting of their romantic choices.
Gorgeous visuals and plenty of emotion on display in the new trailer, boding well for Spielberg’s first time at the helm of a feature musical. The Broadway musical was memorably adapted into a hit film in 1961, winning a whopping 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Still, younger generations may not have been exposed to that picture, so this may prove to be a hit once again with newcomers – and there’s always the nostalgia factor to bring in well-versed crowds too. We’ll see how it fares.
West Side Story will be in US cinemas on December 10th and Australian cinemas on Boxing Day, December 26th.
