Why Michelle Rodriguez is Threatening to Leave the ‘Fast & Furious’ Movies

While Universal is busy lining up more Fast and Furious films, including a Dwayne Johnson-led spinoff, they may want to reconsider their approach to the female characters if they want to keep actress Michelle Rodriguez around.

Rodriguez, who plays Letty in the hugely successful action franchise, has threatened to walk away from the series if the female characters don’t improve.

In an Instagram post announcing that The Fate of the Furious was available to own digitally, the actress included a bit of a protest, posting: “I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise.”

The female characters in the series have been given a spotlight to kick ass now and then, although there’s no question that the key hero players in the franchise are primarily male. As of now, the franchise has two female heroines – Rodriguez’s Letty and Nathalie Emmanuel’s Ramsey – although neither were given all that much to do in the last film, and Ramsey’s tech-hero angle has essentially been blurred together with Ludacris’ Tej Parker. That being said, Charlize Theron entered the franchise in a very big way as Cipher, the new big bad.

It’ll be interesting to see just what’s in store for the female character as the franchise continues and branches out, and whether Rodriguez is actually willing to walk away from this huge property if things really don’t change.

Altogether, the eight films in the action series have made a whopping $US5.1 BILLION. $US1.2 billion of that came from The Fate of the Furious alone.
