Hugh Jackman’s last foray as Logan, aka Wolverine, is aiming to be a much grittier outing.

Word has come through that production has now begun on the still-untitled Wolverine 3, which will see Jackman reuniting with The Wolverine director James Mangold.

Rumours broke earlier this year that 20th Century Fox could be aiming for an R rating (U.S. classification) for the third Wolverine picture. That’s now been confirmed.

In an interview with Collider, producer Simon Kinberg talked a little bit about the film’s rating and tone, revealing that we would be getting “a very radical, bold, different Wolverine than you’ve ever seen in any of these movies.”

He didn’t exactly confirm if the narrative would also be focusing on Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, but he didn’t deny it either.

“I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about that. I will agree with you that Patrick Stewart was rumoured to be a part of that film.”

The setting?

“It takes place in the future.”

And that rating?

“It is an R-rated movie,” Kinberg confirmed. “It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.”

Okay, we’re officially excited. Wolverine fans have long been calling for an appropriately violent chapter for the clawed mutant, and it certainly sounds like that’s on the way.

Fox’s decision to go for an R rating was no doubt made easier with the reception afforded to the studio’s R-rated Deadpool, which smashed expectations, going on to rake in $US761.9 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated picture of all time.

Wolverine 3, set to also star Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant, and Narcos star Boyd Holbrook as a villain, is scheduled for U.S. release on March 3, 2017.
