Writers Chosen for ‘Van Helsing’ Reboot

Universal is getting a move on with their planned reboot of Van Helsing, lining up two screenwriters to pen the script.

Variety is reporting that Jon Spaihts and Eric Heisserer have been brought in to write Van Helsing, a part of Universal’s developing classic monsters universe.

The plan is that Van Helsing will play a big part in the cinematic universe set to kick off with a reboot of The Mummy, although it still isn’t known just what role the hunter will play in the overall narrative. Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are in charge of mapping out the universe and will be producing the Van Helsing.

Spaihts has co-written Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange and penned the script for upcoming Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence-starring sci-fi picture Passengers. He’s also attached to write that reboot of The Mummy.

Heisserer’s script work includes Final Destination 5, 2011’s The Thing, and Story of Your Life, the upcoming sci-fi film from director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario).

Universal brought Van Helsing to life in a 2004 outing starring Hugh Jackman. Despite a poor reception (24% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film managed to pull over $300 million on an estimated production budget of $160 million.
