Writers Hired for Timecop Reboot

Universal’s reboot of Timecop is moving ahead. THR is reporting that Mark and Brian Gunn, the two cousins that penned Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, have been hired to write the screenplay.

The original 1994 sci-fi thriller featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as a cop assigned to the Time Enforcement Commission, an agency that uses time travel to catch the bad guys. Van Damme found himself up against a shady politician who has a tie to his past.

The new Timecop film is said to be “a more gritty and grounded police story with the sci-fi in the background,” although it will still focus on a character’s personal journey. THR states that the film could have a similar tone to Looper, Rian Johnson’s sci-fi thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis.

Marc Shmuger will be producing the project under the umbrella of his Universal-based company Global Produce, which was also behind We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks and The Spectacular Now.

Apart from the Timecop reboot, the Gunn writing team is also working on a third Journey picture, a MacGyver feature film and a remake of The Monster Squad.

For ol’ times’ sake, here’s the trailer for the 1994 film. The line, “In the year 2004,” is bound to make you feel old:
