‘Y: The Last Man’ Has Been Cancelled After One Season, Could It Find a New Home?

FX Productions

Just two weeks ahead of the season 1 finale, Hulu sci-fi drama series Y: The Last Man has been cancelled.

FX has chosen not to renew the series, an adaptation of the acclaimed comic book series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. Creator and executive producer Eliza Clark confirmed the cancellation on social media, expressing disappointment that the series is being cut short when “there is so much more left to tell.”

“We have learned that we will not be moving forward with FX on Hulu for Season 2 of Y: The Last Man,” Clark said in a statement.” I have never in my life been more committed to a story, and there is so much more left to tell. We had a gender diverse team of brilliant artists, led by women at almost every corner of our production… It is the most collaborative, creatively fulfilling and beautiful thing I have ever been a part of. We don’t want it to end.”

As for the chances of Y: The Last Man being picked up elsewhere? There’s hope. “We are committed to finding Y its next home. #YLivesOn,” Clark posted.

Actress Amber Tamblyn, who plays Kimberly Campbell Cunningham, also shared confidence that the series would find a new home. “#YTheLastMan will not get a second season on FX and while I’m disappointed, I know this extraordinary show that has so much to say, and that says it so well, will find a great new home soon,” Tamblyn posted on Twitter. “Looking forward to the next chapter. If you’re with me, let the world know. #YLivesOn.”

Y: The Last Man tells of a cataclysmic event that wipes out every human and animal on Earth that holds a Y chromosome – except for one man, Yorick Brown (Ben Schnetzer), and his pet monkey. The plot follows the survivors as they deal with their losses and attempt to restore world society. The cast includes Diane Lane, Juliana Canfield, Elliot Fletcher, Olivia Thirlby, Ashley Romans, and Marin Ireland.

It’s no doubt an unfortunate development for fans of the series, as well as a potentially disappointing end to a project that FX first had in development back in 2015.

The final episode of Y: The Last Man season 1 will hit Hulu in the US on November 1st. In Australia, the series streams on Binge.
